Derived from an R5 Alpine body modified by the coachbuilder Heuliez, the Renault 5 Turbo was presented as a "concept car" at the 1978 Paris Motor Show. Homologated in Group 4 on September 1, 1980, the prototype's first participation had taken place a few months earlier at the Giro d'Italia.
